Englewood Beach
Shelling

Englewood Beach offers some of the best
shelling in the world!
You can view just some of the shell types you can find on our
Englewood Beach Page
| 1 | Apparel,
Protection Protection from the sun is your number one item! For your Englewood Beach shelling excursion you will want to have on hand sun block, sun glasses, and hat. It is easier to wear shorts and a shirt since you'll be doing a lot of bending over and squatting to look through the sand, etc. A bathing suit can make for moderately awkward moments. |
| 2 | Equipment It is useful to have some sort of container or bag for catching all your treasure. We do not recommend plastic shopping bags as sharp shells can tear these bags easily and they are not environmentally friendly to the wildlife living along Englewood beach. Zip lock bags work well, as do buckets or canvas bags. If you are more interested in shark's teeth, a sand sifter (child's toy) will work exceptionally well for sorting through the fragments of shells, pebbles and sand of course. |
| 3 | Occupied
Shells and Live Sand Dollars It is detrimental to remove living creatures from the environment so do not remove these. You can find sand dollar shells without the animal and these would be okay to take. Be sure to take these to your blanket or car as they will break very easily and will not survive your trek up and down Englewood Beach intact. |
| 4 | "Hot Spots" Many people overlook the sea weed and piles of broken shells you will find on the beach, particularly after a storm. This is a GREAT place to find shark's teeth and perfect smaller shells that are not broken in any way. |
| 5 | The Florida
Snow Shovel This is a tool frequently used by those hunting shark's teeth and shells. It is a "basket" made of wire on the bottom of a long handle, typically wooden. You can improvise with the sand toy mentioned above (the sifter). It can be a little trickier with the waves, but it can be done if you do not wish to carry such a tool up and down Englewood Beach. If you wish, you can purchase these at most local stores in Englewood. |
| 6 | Shell Care When you have finished collecting, be sure to rinse all your shells with fresh water to remove any adverse smells. Make sure they are completely dry before packing them up. It's best to avoid applying any sort of varnish or sealant as this can yellow with age and ruin your great treasure! |
